The campus of Government College, Madappally was a barren land till 1982 when, the nature loving teachers and students of
the college decided to initiate the process of aforestation of the hillock. As a first step a nature club was registered with
World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Trivandrum (Register No.S-KER/848 dated 13.10.1982). The following years witnessed the transformation
of the barren, rocky landscape into a lush green campus garden. The garden was officially declared as a botanic garden by
the then Minister for Education, Government of Kerala, Shri. K. Chandrasekharan on 04.10.1990.
Every year, the members of the Nature club added more and more plant species to the garden. At present the major function
of the club is to protect and maintain the painstakingly brought up garden. The garden boasts of a very rich floral diversity
to the tune of 169 species (see below). Besides the maintenance of the garden nature club of the college takes every effort
to promote environmental friendliness among its students. This objective is met by organizing nature camps, seminars, quiz
programmes, essay competitions, etc.
