Government College, Madappally, popularly known as Madappally College is the first Government College in Kerala to be
bestowed with the prestigious 'A' grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore. With a humble
beginning in 1958 the college has grown to an institution of great reputation offering 10 courses at Under Graduate level
and 5 courses at Post graduate level.
The college is located on Madappally Hill of Onchiyam Panchayat, Vadakara Taluk, Kozhikode District of Kerala State in the
northern side of N.H.17, between Vadakara town and Mahe, a segment of the Union Territory of Pondicherry. It is a major center
of higher education coming under the jurisdiction of the University of Calicut.
Dr. K. L. Srimali, the then Minister of Education, Govt. of India, laid the foundation stone of the College building and
also inaugurated the College in 1958. The College started functioning in June 1958 with two divisions of Pre-University classes,
strength being 160, temporarily housed in a rented building used by the Govt. Madappally primary school. Later, the College
was shifted in June 1959 to the newly constructed building in the site previously acquired for the purpose of the Madappally
Govt. Fisheries Technical School. The college was shifted to its permanent buildings on the Madappally Hill on 15.03.1963.
The college was under the University of Kerala till it came under the University of Calicut in 1968. The college was awarded
'A' grade by NAAC in November 2004.
